CUNEIFORM (KYOO-nee-ih-form)

The World's First Writing · Reed on Clay · The Original Record

A reed stylus pressed at an angle into wet clay makes a wedge shape. Press it many times in different orientations and you have the cuneiform script — the first writing system, developed in Sumer around 3400 BCE.

It began as accounting. Marks for goods. Numbers for livestock. And then — within centuries — it became myth, law, love poetry, lament, astronomical observation, and the greatest stories ever told.

The same wedge that counted barrels of grain eventually inscribed: "Gilgamesh, who saw the deep, who knew the sea, who learned of all things — he who had experienced everything, he had gained complete wisdom."

When you see cuneiform in the borders of the Tablets of Destiny cards, you are looking at the script that carries everything — the accounting of the gods and the grief of the first king and the laws of the first city and the words of a woman descending into the underworld of her own choosing.

The cards are inscribed. They carry what was written a very long time ago.
