CHAMBER TWO — THE REALMS

KUR (KOOR)

The Underworld · The Mountain · The Land of No Return Sumerian: the same word means both "mountain" and "underworld" — they understood that the highest and lowest places share something

The Kur is where the dead go. It is not a place of punishment — it is simply the place where the living are not. The dead eat dust and clay. They drink muddy water. They wander in the dark wearing feathered garments like birds.

But the Kur is also the mountain. The high place where the gods can be reached. The Sumerians built ziggurats — artificial mountains — to create the threshold between earth and heaven. The same word for the below and the above. The same word for where you go when you die and where you go when you ascend.

This is not an accident. The Sumerians understood what we keep forgetting: the deepest descent and the highest ascent begin in the same direction.
