CHAMBER ONE — THE GODS

SHAMASH (SHAH-mash)

The Sun God · God of Justice · He Who Sees All Things Akkadian: the sun itself. Sumerian equivalent: UTU

Every morning Shamash opens the great double doors of heaven and rides his chariot across the sky. Every evening the mountains close behind him. During the day, there is nowhere he does not see. No lie can be spoken beneath his light. No injustice can be hidden from him.

He is the god to whom kings appealed for justice — the great law-giver Hammurabi depicted himself receiving the law directly from Shamash's hand. When Gilgamesh and Enkidu traveled to the Cedar Forest to slay the monster Humbaba, it was Shamash who fought at their side, sending his seven winds to blind and bind the great guardian of the forest.

He sees without judgment and acts without cruelty. He is not the wrathful god. He is the witness. The one who can be appealed to because he will not look away from what is true.

His domain in the deck: Truth. Divine clarity. Accountability. The illumination that cannot be argued with. Justice as the natural order restored.

His shadow: The harsh light that sees but does not feel. Clarity that becomes cruelty. Truth used as a weapon.
