THE DESCENT OF INANNA

The Central Myth of the Deck · Approximately 1750 BCE (earliest written version)

Inanna, Queen of Heaven, "opened her ear to the Great Below." She "abandoned heaven, abandoned earth, and descended to the underworld." She gave instructions to her servant Ninshubur: if I do not return in three days, set up a lament for me. Go to Enlil, to Nanna, to Enki. Weep. Beat your drum. Someone will help.

She descended through seven gates and was killed by her sister Ereshkigal.

Three days later, Ninshubur did exactly as she was told. Enlil refused to help. Nanna refused. Enki created two creatures — the kurgarra and the galatur — from the dirt under his fingernails. He sent them down with the food and water of life. They found Ereshkigal in labor, crying out in pain. They mirrored her. Mourned when she mourned. Cried out when she cried out.

Ereshkigal offered them anything. They asked for Inanna's corpse. She gave it. They revived her with the food and water of life.

Inanna returned from the dead.

This is the blueprint for every meaningful transformation in the deck: full descent. Complete stripping of everything you use to protect yourself. Death in some form. Witness. Revival. Return.
