The Sumerian universe was divided between these two poles — not as good and evil, but as above-ground life and below-ground death. Heaven (An) above. Earth (Ki) in the middle. The Kur (underworld) below.
Inanna ruled the Great Above. She chose to descend to the Great Below. This is not a myth about conquering death — it is a myth about a being who needed to know the whole of existence before she could fully inhabit her throne.
The Great Above without the Great Below is incomplete sovereignty. The Great Below without return is extinction.
The myth asks: can you descend fully, die fully, and return? Can you hold both?
