When Inanna descended to the underworld, she passed through seven gates. At each gate, Neti the gatekeeper removed one of her sacred garments and adornments — the seven Me, the divine powers she wore as a queen. She arrived before Ereshkigal wearing nothing.
The seven gates are the seven layers of the self that the descent strips away. Status. Protection. Authority. Beauty. Memory. Will. Identity. What remains when all of it is gone?
That is what the underworld teaches.
